Chapter 5 · The File

The third time she pushed the door open, the tea was already there — hot, ylang-ylang in the air, the lights a shade dimmer than last time. No one asked her what she wanted today.

Chapter 5 · The File

Nothing needs to be said

The therapist opened her file: left shoulder tighter than the right, pressure at level three just right, sleep running shallow lately, the music off for the second half. Lying down, she thought: so this is what being remembered feels like — no becoming a stranger again, no explaining herself all over.

She slept through that session. Not the heavy sleep of exhaustion, but a light, safe sleep — one she could wake from at any moment and did not want to. When she woke, the tea was still warm, and outside the window it was fully dark.

Beyond the file

Walking her to the door, the concierge mentioned, almost in passing: You are traveling the week after next — shall I hold the session for the night you land? She stopped short: it was a trip she had mentioned exactly once, at the tea table.

She smiled and said yes, hold it. Outside, the night wind was cold, and she pulled her scarf closer — but somewhere inside her was warm: in this whole city, there was one place that remembered her.

Not ready yet? That's fine.
