Chapter 6 · The Friday Ritual

Condition shows

The change was slow, and impossible to hide: at the three o'clock meeting her back was still straight; through two back-to-back presentations her voice did not give out; at night she lay down and was drowsy within ten minutes of picking up her phone.

She knew the reason better than anyone. Fatigue that gets removed on schedule never gets the chance to snowball. Each session was like maintenance performed on a system: nothing dramatic, nothing miraculous — just, reliably, nothing going wrong.

She let the secret slip

The hardest-working young woman on her team asked her quietly: 'Your color has been so steady lately — are you... in love?' She laughed out loud, thought for a moment, and slid the concierge's number across.

'Not love,' she said. 'Someone takes care of me, on a schedule. Go once. Hand yourself over once, and you will understand.' That evening, the young woman submitted her application.

Not ready yet? That's fine.
