Starting from the shoulders
The therapist's hands settled onto her shoulders first, the heels of the palms carrying warm oil, pressing down little by little. She tensed by instinct, then let that steady rhythm persuade her, releasing inch by inch. The tightness hoarded through three months of meeting rooms moved outward like a falling tide.
'Here,' the therapist said softly. 'You have been breathing with your shoulders.' Her eyes stung. No one had ever said that to her — she had not known it herself.
When it ended
The ninety minutes went faster than she had expected. The room did not brighten right away; she lay there a while longer, listening to her heartbeat settle back to its ordinary speed.
When she sat up, she rolled her neck without thinking — it turned. The smallness of that motion made her laugh, and laughing, her eyes reddened. The concierge asked nothing, only refilled her tea.
