Ten Minutes at the Tea Table

Before every session formally begins, there are ten minutes reserved for tea alone. Those ten minutes look like an extra. They are the most important step of the whole evening.

Ten Minutes at the Tea Table

Sit down first, then lie down

Someone who has just come in from outside has her shoulders up by her ears, her speech quick, her mind still turning over unanswered messages. Lie her down immediately and the first twenty minutes are wasted on 'switching over.' The tea sitting is that switch: candlelight, warm tea, a quiet room, leading her out of the day first.

This is when the concierge goes over the evening's details with you: length, areas to focus on, scent, whether you feel like talking. The finer the details settled here, the less you need to say later — just close your eyes and enjoy.

Ritual is not decoration

People ask why something simple is done with such ceremony. Because the ceremony itself is a message: it tells the body that in the time ahead, you will be treated with care. Once that feeling is established, every minute that follows is worth double.

Ten minutes later the tea has cooled by half, and so has she. Only then, walking into the room, does the evening truly begin.
